When idle, the receiver may be configured to operate in either of two sustain states: active or standby. In active sustain mode, the receivers remain “on” all the time. In standby mode, the receiver is “turned off” when not in use as a power conservation measure. The receiver is capable of operating with either 5 V or 3.3 V VCC , allowing the MAX3120ETA+ to be used in a variety of different power domains. The receivers are also tolerant of wide supply voltage variations, allowing it to accommodate battery voltage changes and maintain reliable communication.When enabled, the three-state transmitter is capable of driving either TTL or CMOS levels, depending on the configuration of the external pull-up resistor. These pins are also capable of entering tri-state mode when not in use, reducing power consumption and extending battery life. The MAX3120ETA+ also supports a variety of popular digital protocols. This chip is capable of operating in either UART, SPI, or I²C mode. In UART mode, the chip supports baud rates from 9.6 Kbps to 10 Mbps. In SPI mode, the chip supports data transfer rates from 6 Mbps to 40 Mbps. And in I²C mode, the chip supports data transfer rates from 10 Kbps to 3.4 Mbps.
