Each driver consist of a differential amplifier, high-speed driver, and a programmable slew rate controller.The driver circuitry is designed to provide the low power flat frequency response characteristic of RS-232. The device provides for two operating modes — low power and normal. The low power (LP) mode provides for reduced power dissipation, while the normal (NM) mode provides for a greater slew rate margin.The device can also be programmed to support a wide range of data rates from 2 Mbps up to 15 Mbps. The voltage levels are also selectable, ranging from 3.0 V to 15 V.The receiver converts the incoming differential or single-ended TTL/CMOS/RS-422 signals to the desired data format and voltage level. The device can also be programmed to power up in the maximum power down (MPD) state to allow for power savings during non-operating times.The transmitter converts the incoming data to the desired voltage level for transmission across the transmission line.
