Working principle

The MAX3238EAI+T is a half-duplex RS-232 transceiver, which means it only operates in one direction at a time and consists of a transmitter, receiver and associated circuitry. It includes an onboard voltage regulator, which provides supply voltages from 3.0V to 5.5V. The voltage regulator allows for single-supply and low-power operation, making it ideal for battery-powered applications.

The receiver input and output are differential, which allows for common-mode rejection and improved noise immunity. In addition, the receiver input has both a high-impedance and a low-impedance mode, facilitating the connection of multiple transceivers in the same configuration. The MAX3238EAI+T also includes a series of data communications signaling levels, including a wake-up interrupt and an output enable signal.

The transceiver’s transmitter is designed exclusively for RS-232 signaling. Its output stages easily drive loads with an output voltage swing greater than or equal to 3V. The ESD protection circuit works in conjunction with an active discharge circuit, which discharges the bus quickly and accurately to the standard RS-232 idle level.

The MAX3238EAI+T can be used in both full-duplex and half-duplex configurations. In full-duplex mode, the transmitter and receiver can be enabled and disabled independently, allowing simultaneous data transfer in two directions. In half-duplex mode, the transmitter and receiver are enabled and disabled at the same time, allowing data to be transferred in one direction only.
