The MAX3612ETM+T is a clock generator and frequency synthesizer featuring robust jitter suppression. As a clock generator, it provides a low-jitter, high-frequency output clock from a single low frequency reference clock with a wide programmable frequency range, and as a frequency synthesizer it provides frequency agility over a wide frequency range. This makes the MAX3612ETM+T suitable for a wide range of applications including communications systems, test and instrumentation, and security systems.
The MAX3612ETM+T utilizes a robust jitter suppression technique called loop bandwidth control that suppresses both random jitter and periodic jitter, thus providing excellent output clock quality over operating temperature and voltage range. Additionally, the MAX3612ETM+T includes numerous features that make it suitable for a wide variety of applications.
The MAX3612ETM+T is capable of operating over a wide range of input clock frequencies, from 12.5kHz to 1MHz. The output clock rate can programmably be set between 1Hz to 13MHz for the Synthesizer and up to 30MHz for the Clock Generator output. It also offers two distinct modes of operation; the Synthesizer mode and the Clock Generator mode.
In Synthesizer mode, the MAX3612ETM+T functions as a frequency synthesizer and provides a highly programmable output frequency range from 1Hz to 13MHz. Its input reference clock is divided down by 96, which provides an output clock frequency of 1/96 of the input reference clock frequency. The output clock frequency is then further divided down to generate the output clock frequency. The output clock frequency can be programmed in 1/96 increments via four 11-bit programming words. This can be pre-programmed, set remotely or via the on-board MODBUS interface.
In Clock Generator mode, the MAX3612ETM+T functions as a multi-frequency clock generator and provides a programmable output frequency range from 1 to 30MHz. The output clock frequency can be set to any frequency within its programmable range and can be pre-programmed or set remotely. The clock frequency is generated from the input reference clock by dividing the reference clock frequency by a programmed division factor. The division factor is programmable from 1 to 65535.
The MAX3612ETM+T offers a variety of features such as on-board temperature and voltage monitors, and a phase-locked loop (PLL) phase detector. The temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the system frequently and alerts the user or any connected devices if the temperature is outside of the normal range. The voltage detector monitors the voltage of the system and provides voltage feedback to control the output frequency. The phase detector locks the output clock to the input reference clock and maintains a precise phase relationship between them. This allows the output clock to remain locked in phase with the input reference clock, even in noisy environments.
The MAX3612ETM+T also features a wide range of configurable operating modes. These include “low power” mode for maximum power saving; “high performance” mode for higher frequency stability; and “extended range” mode for extended output clock range without reducing accuracy. The clock generator and frequency synthesizer also offers “pin-programmable” mode, which allows configuration of the output frequency without any programming.
