MAX4359EAX Application Field and Working Principle

The MAX4359EAX is a special-purpose, ultra-low-voltage quad SPST analog switch designed for signal routing and signal multiplexing applications. It is available in the 0.6mm × 0.6mm in a lead-free TDFN package. This device is particularly suited for circuits connected to a single voltage source, such as I/O signaling in battery- powered systems where power consumption and board space are critical.

The MAX4359EAX is designed mainly for portable applications that are powered by any number of batteries, including three-cell Li-ion (7V-8V), three-cell NiMH (6V-9V), and two-cell Alkaline (4V-6V). The MAX4359EAX has a break-before-make switching architecture ensuring low signal distortion and Signal Integrity (SI) performance. Additionally, signal output levels remain constant during operation, down to 0V supply, making the device ideal for single-supply battery-powered systems.

The MAX4359EAX is ideally suited for RF and mixed-signal applications. The device has typical break-before-make switch times of only 10ns, enabling signal routing and multiplexing of fast digital signals in digital systems. It is also suitable for use in analog systems where very low harmonic distortion is required. Additionally, delays between switching inputs and outputs are minimal when operated from a single 1.8V power supply.

The MAX4359EAX is made up of four independent SPST (single-pole single-throw) switches, each having an enable control line and a common signal path. Each switch is limited to a maximum of 200mA current and can be enabled by applying a High logic level (1.7V or higher) on its enable pin. The on-resistance of the switch is a function of the supply voltage, with a typical on-resistance of 0.35Ω at 1.8V supply.

The working principle of the MAX4359EAX is based on the principle of four switches in parallel that are independently controlled by logic signals. When the logic signal is a High logic level, the corresponding switch inside the device is enabled and the signal changes from the input to the output (break-before-make operation). When the logic signal is a Low logic level, all the switches are disabled and no signal is allowed to pass from the input to the output. This allows for an independent signal routing and multiplexing function, depending on the logic signals applied to the switch.

The MAX4359EAX is designed to operate in the temperature range of -40° to +105°C, making it suitable for a wide range of applications and environments. The device is RoHS compliant and is available in a TDFN package, making it suitable for surface-mount applications. The MAX4359EAX is also pin-compatible with the MAX4356EAX, allowing for easy migration from the MAX4356EAX device.
