The MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board is an evaluation board designed for the MAX44005 ambient light sensor. It features wide dynamic range, cover from 0.045 lux to 188,000 lux. The MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board features two operating modes, continuous mode and high-speed sampling mode. In high-speed sampling mode, outputs are provided from the lux sensor over a wide dynamic range from 0.045 lux up to 600 lux. The output of the MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board can be fed to standard microcontrollers for further calculation and actuation.
To further simplify the design process, the MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board also provides system monitor features, communication features, evaluation software, and application notes. The system monitor features support monitoring of the system such as active/standby power supply, brownout detect, and programmable reset. The communication features consist of a UART interface, SMBus, and I2C. The evaluation software offers interactive user friendly interface which offers capability to adjust parameters, log data, and configure settings. Lastly, the application notes provide an anchor and guide for users to success the light intensity sensing application.
The main component of the MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board is sensor, MAX44005, which is a light-to-digital converter. Its sensing element, silicon photodiode, provides wide dynamic range of ambient light intensity from 0.045 lux to 188,000 lux. The digital output is linearized by look-up table (LUT), which consists of linearization coefficient, correction factor, and integration time setting. The microprocessor provides autonomous control of the MAX44005EVSYS# evaluation board.
At the heart of the MAX44005 is an analog-to-digital converter, which provides an output response that is linear in logarithm of output light intensity. The MAX44005EVSYS# uses a wide dynamic range logarithmic circuit to compress the output response to give a linear output over the 4-to-5-bit range. This circuit works by dividing the input signal into an 8-bit data stream output and a 16-bit result (number of averaged signal samples) output. The MIC5625 LED driver integrated into the board provides selectable sensitivity for the light readings being measured and automatically adapts to the ambient light levels for better accuracy.
