MAX490EESA Application Field and Working Principle

The MAX490EESA is a high speed, low power, true RS-485/RS-422 transceiver, developed by Maxim Integrated. It is an ideal choice for applications such as automotive and industrial systems, as well as many consumer applications that require reliable data communications over twisted pair cables in noisy environments.

The MAX490EESA has three separate applications, as a driver, receiver, and transceiver – effectively replacing up to three separate devices. Each application requires power from a different source, for example, the driver requires +5V, the receiver requires +12V, and the transceiver requires +12V and -12V. This makes the device both cost and space efficient.

The driver of the MAX490EESA directly connects to the twisted-pair cable, and is responsible for converting the digital data from the MCU into DSL signals for transmission. It also has low-power shutdown and data-slew rate control for improved system EMI (electromagnetic interference) performance. The receiver on the other hand, is designed to convert the incoming DSL signals back to digital data.
