The MAX5020CSA+T is an integrated DC/DC switching controller IC, primarily used as a power management and voltage regulation solution. This device was developed by Maxim Integrated, a US-based technology and design company specializing in the design, manufacturing and marketing of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits.

The MAX5020CSA+T is a high-efficiency, high switching frequency integrated switching controller. It utilizes Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control from the internal 2 MHz oscillator, which enables low external component count, high efficiency and high switching frequency for applications such as portable electronics, wireless telecommunications, and networking subsystems. The high switching frequency also makes the MAX5020CSA+T ideal for small form-factor solutions when faced with high input/output transient requirements.

The MAX5020CSA+T features a low-noise, bi-directional voltage regulator that supports a wide input voltage range of 3.9V to 42V and provides the necessary regulated output voltage to power the load without transferring switch noise into the system. It is implemented using an internally-programmed pulse width modulator (PWM) that incorporates internal feedback, compensation and timing components which, along with two external N-channel power MOSFETs, provides a cost-effective, space-saving DC/DC converter solution.

The MAX5020CSA+T’s efficient PWM operation enables output converters to achieve high efficiency up to 96% across varying temperatures. An adjustable switching frequency operating range of 1kHz-2MHz with 75ps of resolution supports a wide range of applications as required. The device also offers adjustable output current, under-voltage lockout (UVLO) protection, over-voltage protection, output voltage margining and thermal shutdown. Furthermore, the over-current protection feature is composed of two stages; current limiting and peak current limiting.

The MAX5020CSA+T includes two stage low on-resistance N-channel MOSFET drivers, with the lower gate drive optimized for low voltage drive during turn-off and the upper optimized for high current drive during turn-on. Both N-channel gate drive outputs sources and sink up to 3A with a typical 500ns rising time at 15A, and 500ns falling time at 5A. This low gate charging time reduces reverse recovery losses in the MOSFETs, thus increasing efficiency and improving light load efficiency. The device also offers programmable prebias soft-start, which reduces inrush current at startup, and a programmable soft-stop feature that smoothly reduces output current prior to entering shutdown mode.

The MAX5020CSA+T device is available in an SOIC-8 package. This device is aimed at helping customers develop efficient power-management solutions with reduced design cycles and components, significantly reducing the size and cost of the design.
