The MAX5020ESA is a low-cost internally compensated, dual phase, synchronous switching regulator controller designed for DC/DC conversion with up to 95% efficiency. This device offers a wide range of operating modes, including current mode fixed frequency operation, Burst Mode operation, and power-on reset for improved startup stability. It also offers soft-start for improved load transient management. The MAX5020ESA features fast, accurate reference tracking of a 0.8 V to 4.5 V output voltage, and current-mode loop control over a wide range of input voltages. It has a wide operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, and it works with both Windows 98 and NT.

The MAX5020ESA has a number of applications in the fields of power management and regulation, including providing reliable and efficient power conversion for industrial systems, telecom, computing and automotive systems. The device is ideal for use in applications such as personal computers, hard disk drives and notebooks, set-top boxes, industrial automation systems, automotive systems, digital imaging and storage devices, motor drives, active noise cancellation systems and other applications requiring a high level of efficiency and performance.

The MAX5020ESA is based on a synchronous current mode architecture, where the current regulation in the control loop is done by sense reflection of the inductor current through the integrated senses resistor. It uses a single-ended voltage reference to regulate the voltage at the output. The primary clock frequency of the device is determined by the voltage applied to the oscillator pin, which can vary from 0.8 V to 6 V. The reference tracking is accomplished by differential sensing of ground referenced voltage and current data.

The controller also features a patented "soft-start" algorithm which reduces switching losses during start-up, and eliminates any unnecessary output discharge current. The device also has an internal power-on reset (POR) which ensures correct operation even after a power-on reset. The output voltage ramp rate is programmable with the voltage ramp pin, allowing for variation of the output voltage amplitude to achieve the desired response time.

The MAX5020ESA uses a range of protection features such as cycle-by-cycle current limit, voltage tracking, output overvoltage detect and control, and over temperature shut-down. The device can also monitor the external power supply and can shut down the system if an overcurrent or overvoltage condition is detected. The device includes an enable pin which can be used to power down the controller without affecting the output voltage.
