The MAX5021EUA is a high-speed, low-noise, step-down switching regulator controller. This device integrates two dc-to-dc switching controllers and two high-speed low-noise linear regulators in a single chip. The two switching controllers work together with two external power MOSFETs and two linear regulators to produce two independent isolated outputs. The switching controllers feature a 2-A/45-V power stage, independent frequency control, and cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The MAX5021EUA is designed to generate high-frequency power supplies with low output-voltage ripple and good transient response using external passive components. This device is suitable for applications such as portable computers and other industrial, telecommunications, and automotive applications.
When the input supply voltage decreases, the MAX5021EUA produces a regulated output voltage by switching a logic signal on and off at high frequency. When the MAX5021EUA is enabled, a fixed on-time and off-time, as well as a peak current limit sets the amount of energy transferred to theoutput. The output voltage is maintained at the programmed value with very low line and load regulation in spite of changes in switching frequency and current-sense programming.
In addition to its step-down capabilities, the MAX5021EUA can be used as a buck-boost regulator, allowing the controller to generate outputs within the 0-V to 65-V range from a single input source. This feature is used when the input voltage is below, equal to, or greater than the output voltage.
The MAX5021EUA includes two linear regulators that can be used to power ICs or other low-noise circuits that require well-regulated outputs. These linear regulators feature dual mode control, automatic offset compensation, and fast transient response. The dual mode control allows the user to select a fixed-VOUT mode or a regulation mode with a +5% VOUT setting accuracy. The automatic offset compensation allows the linear regulator to reduce the output voltage when sourcing current and to increase the output voltage when sinking current.
The MAX5021EUA is capable of powering loads up to 25W using just two external power MOSFETs and one sense resistor and up to 40W using four MOSFETs. To maximize efficiency and reduce noise, the device features a proprietary current-sensing circuitry that cancels the common-mode noise and results in lower peak-to-peak current-sense noise. The MAX5021EUA includes overvoltage and overcurrent protection, as well as power-up sequencing. It is available in a 8-pin microMAX package.
The MAX5021EUA is an ideal solution for powering high-speed, low-noise, step-down switching regulator applications. This device offers low-noise linear regulators, high-speed switching controllers, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, power-up sequencing, and dual mode control, all in a compact 8-pin package.
