The switching regulator consists of four major functional blocks, namely an input voltage regulation, an internal clock source, a high-side power switch, and a current mode loop controller.

The MAX5033BUSA starts in Burst Mode operation. The internal clock starts counting up after an internal timeout. Once the counter reaches the programmed off-time, it times out and the device enters PWM mode, providing a regulated output voltage. During the on-time, the device switches on the MOSFET and the inductor supplies current to the output capacitor. The feedback voltage adjusts the off-time such that the average inductor current remains constant. At the end of the off-time, the MOSFET will be turned off and the inductor current is discharged into output capacitor through the catch diode.

The MAX5033BUSA also features other built-in functions, like over-current protection and short-circuit protection. The on-chip compensation maintains the stability in the power supply loop. The controller includes a control input current limit adjustment to protect external MOSFETs against sudden current surge or load transients.
