MAX5035EVKIT is an evaluation board for the Digital PWM Controller product family, designed to demonstrate the features and operation of the Maxim MAX5035 device. The evaluation board is a DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS providing the user with flexibility for evaluating a range of different power supply parameters.
The MAX5035EVKIT utilises an innovative digitally-controlled power stage with the incorporation of a low-cost, low-on-resistance MOSFET driver, a regulated/programmable input voltage and current sense amplifier/regulator. This design simplifies the user’s task of creating an easy-to-use design for off-line power supplies.
The wide input voltage range of the MAX5035EVKIT accommodates most any mains voltage. Additionally, it can be easily programmed to provide multiple output voltages, outputs are provided for both standard rectifier or flyback topologies, and two different output current ratings are available. This allows for the evaluation of a wide range of power supplies.
The board\'s input and output power stages are controlled by a Maxim MAX5035 Digital PWM Controller. The PWM Controller is programmed via SPI protocol using a USB microcontroller adapter. The Microcontroller Adapter is connected to the PC application via USB which can be used to control all parameters including voltage, current limit, coast-to-coast soft-start, etc.
The MAX5035EVKIT provides two output current ratings. The power stage can support both standard rectifier and flyback topologies. In addition, the MAX5035EVKIT incorporates a load support circuit on the output. This circuit provides further protection against overloads when subjected to surge currents that can occur in a short circuit situation.
The evaluation board also includes over-voltage protection circuitry to protect the board against output voltage overshoot as well as input voltage under-voltage protection. This ensures that when an input voltage dip occurs, the power supply will be protected from damage.
Programming of the board is accomplished via the USB interface. Users can download the latest firmware updates for the microcontroller as well as configure the board to meet their specific requirements. This feature also enables the user to incrementally design and simulate the board prior to its actual operation.
The MAX5035EVKIT supports both two-state (auto/manual) and three-state (test/normal/auto) operating modes. While in auto mode, the board will automatically sense the input voltage and adjust the output voltage and current accordingly. The manual mode allows users to fine tune the output parameters, or select any preset values.
The evaluation board also includes test points for monitoring the output voltage and current. Additionally, the board includes a built-in over-temperature protection circuit. This circuit limits the output current and voltage if the board temperature exceeds its maximum rating.
The MAX5035EVKIT provides a simple yet powerful platform to evaluate off-line SMPS designs. The board\'s features make it an ideal solution for beginners, as well as advanced professionals, who are looking for a quick development solution for their next SMPS design.
