MAX5094CASA+ - A DC DC Switching Controller

The MAX5094CASA+ is a low noise, low dropout switching controller from Maxim Integrated. It is a unique type of DC DC switching controller that offers two independent outputs for automotive, industrial, and telecommunication applications. The MAX5094CASA+ integrates high frequency (Up to 1MHz) operation and precision/linear voltage tracking features with a high current switching MOSFET.

Working Principle

The device is configured to provide programmable switching frequency, and pulse-width-modulated (PWM) buck switching regulators. With regard to current sense and control, the MAX5094CASA+ employs an “external” voltage divider for the current sense resistor, connected in the circuit of the buck PWM-switched converter.

The MAX5094CASA+ offers a soft-start function which ramps the output voltage up and down to reduce surge currents during start-up and shut-down. This feature reduces the stress on the system components, including the output capacitor, and is particularly useful in applications with relatively long start-up or shut-down times. The MAX5094CASA+ features a synchronization input pin which has various features such as: a low frequency mode capable of operating at frequencies down to 10Hz; an internal phase-locked loop (PLL) which frequency-hopping technique enables the regulator to achieve higher frequency operation, typically up to 1MHz; and a serial clock signal (from an external clock source) is used to synchronize all internal clocks and oscillators.
