MAX5095AAUA is a DC DC Switching controller from the family of PMIC (Power Management ICs) Voltage Regulators.DC DC switching controllers are a kind of voltage regulators that are used to provide a controlled output voltage from a source of higher voltage power. The concept of DC DC switching regulators is simple: an external switching transistor driven by an internal circuit such as a PWM (pulse-width modulation) generator, whose output voltage can be adjusted by the PWM duty-cycle of the transistor.MAX5095AAUA is a stand-alone, three-function DC DC switching controller designed to provide all the active elements needed to implement a fixed frequency, step-down DC-DC converter. It is a single-channel, step-down (buck) regulator that operates from a wide input-voltage range and delivers an adjustable current of up to 1.5A with a programmable voltage from 0.8V to 5V.The MAX5095AAUA IC integrates a high-side & low-side output driver, sensing feedback, and an internal control logic that simplifies control, programming, and protection functions necessary for a power supply. The control logic contains high and low voltage Detectors, thermal shutdown circuitry, POR circuitry, low external component count and a voltage trimmed Bandgap reference.The converter can be configured with an external synchronization pin and can be synchronized to an external clock of up to 300kHz, while the voltage is regulated by a single external feedback resistor.It is adjustable over temperature, and features a low current standby mode to reduce operating power consumption. The output disconnects in the power-down mode, preventing any capacitive charging current, and the internal PWM clock mode provides low noise switching performance.The MAX5095AAUA is conservatively rated and supports a wide range of Applications, including 5V and 12V system applications, computer and peripheral applications, battery-powered applications, and applications where a regulated output load is needed, such as DVDs and DVRs.Applications

MAX5095AAUA uses an external switching transistor to step-down the input voltage and provide an adjustable output voltage. The components used to implement the MAX5095AAUA buck converter include the IC, an external switching transistor, an external voltage feedback divider, an external compensation network, a bypass capacitor and a freewheeling diode.The external transistor is driven with a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal, whose output voltage is controlled by the duty cycle of the switch. The duty cycle is determined by Feedback voltage, RATE (pin 6) reference voltage and internal control logic.The power stage is a two-transistor buck converter, consisting of the switching transistor and a diode rectifier. The feedback voltage is monitored by a comparator for regulation of the output voltage. The output of the regulator is trimmed by the RATE pin to provide a precise voltage reference.The IC also includes thermal shutdown circuitry, POR (Power On Reset) circuitry, and a voltage trimmed Bandgap reference to make efficient power management.
