The MAX5097BATE+T is an integrated switching regulator controller from Maxim Integratedthat is designed for use in DC-to-DC power conversion applications. The device is designedto provide improved phase-shift control, improved frequency dither and jitter, as wellas load-line tracking for improved efficiency and power rail accuracy. The device also offersa wide range of H-bridge topology options and a comprehensive suite of protections. Thismakes it well-suited for providing generated power rails for applications such as graphicsprocessing, server, storage and networking.

Working Principle

The MAX5097BATE+T uses the conventional dual-mode switching regulator arrangement of ahigh-current switch (the power MOSFET) connected in series with a low-current controlsection, the driver. The high-current switch is connected in series with the input voltage andthe output voltage, and works as a voltage regulator by alternating between switching todischarge energy and switching off to recharge energy. The driver controls the power MOSFETswitch by applying a PWM signal at the switching frequency determined by the peak currentmode controller.

The high-side power MOSFET switch is connected in series with the input voltage and theoutput voltage, and works as the voltage regulator by alternating between switching todischarge energy and switching off to recharge energy. The low-side power MOSFET switchis connected in parallel with the input voltage and works as an active discharge switch,preventing the input voltage from surging.

The MAX5097BATE+T features load-line tracking, which is a technique for controlling theoutput voltage by controlling the slope of the power MOSFET switch control voltage. Thistechnique eliminates droop and provides fast transient response. It also provides improvedefficiency by avoiding peak currents in the power MOSFET switch. The MAX5097BATE+Tcombines load-line tracking with enhanced frequency dither and jitter to produce anultra-fast transient response time of 500ns.

The MAX5097BATE+T also contains a suite of protections to protect against fault conditionsthat can occur due to external faults, such as an over-current event. The device providesintegrated cycle-by-cycle under-voltage protection, over-current protection, short-circuitprotection, and thermal protection. It also supports internal and external pre-biasing controland internal soft-start/pre-biasing.

Applications

The MAX5097BATE+T is engineered to meet the requirements of demanding DC-to-DCconversion applications, such as graphics processing, servers, storage and networking. Thedevice’s high-voltage and high-current capability and the integrated protections make it wellsuited for these applications.
