Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) are electronic circuits that receive digital signals and convert them into analog signals. The MAX521BCWG+T is an 8-bit digital-to-analog (DAC) converter that features wide operating-voltage, low power consumption, and excellent linearity. This dual DAC provides easy calibration capabilities, allowing designers the ability to optimize their design to meet the most stringent of requirements.

The MAX521BCWG+T is ideal for medical and industrial applications, along with a broad range of data acquisition and instrumentation applications. These include process control, pressure or temperature sensing, or motor control. Additionally, the device is characterized for operation over the temperature range of -40 to +85 °C.

Working Principle and Features

The MAX521BCWG+T is very easy to use in any system because it doesn’t need any external parts and features built-in rail-to-rail input and output ranges.This device and its working principle are evolved from resistor ladders. It utilizes a switch network of resistors connected in parallel network with high accuracy. Analog input signals are coupled to each end of the resistor ladder and routed through a series of switches to the output. The DAC resolution is a function of the number of resistors used in the ladder. The MAX521BCWG+T utilizes 8-bit resolution, meaning it has 8 resistors.

The MAX521BCWG+T includes a 7-bit input register and an 8-bit DAC register which is used to store the DAC value. Data is transferred from the input register to the DAC register by the write command from the microcontroller. Also, data is transferred from the DAC register to the input register via the read command from the microcontroller.The on-chip DAC switches are controlled by an internal 8-bit data latch. By changing the data latch values, analog voltage is set at the output of the DAC.

The DAC can generate analog output in the range of 0 to Vref (internal), 0 to VDD, or 0 to GND depending on configuration. It has maximum power consumption of 50μA and can operate with VDD in the range of 2.7V to 5.5V. Moreover, a POR pin is provided to reset the DAC and voltage reference. In addition, features like double-buffered input registers, power-on reset, an external reference input, active high chip select and an asynchronous active low clear pin are also available. In addition to all of these benefits, the MAX521BCWG+T is also very small in size and is available in 8-Pin SOIC and 8-Pin PDIP packages.
