The MAX5353BEPA+ is an advanced digital-to-analog converter (DAC), designed to operate as either a current output DAC or voltage output DAC. Using a proprietary high-speed, high-linearity 8-bit bi-directional digital-to-analog converter (DAC) core, the MAX5353BEPA+ is capable of achieving better than 0.12LSB (1LSB=1/256th of the full-scale range) linearity error, and 11-bit monotonic performance, making these devices ideal for data acquisition applications such as motor drive, voltage or current control, and process control.

The MAX5353BEPA+ is also capable of producing up to 8 bits of accuracy, with an output range from 0 to 4v. It gives the designer the flexibility to be able to adjust the gain for better dynamic range and resolution, as well as ensuring minimum settling time. The maximum output frequency of the MAX5353BEPA+ is 200kHz, making it suitable for a variety of data acquisition and process control applications, including pulse-width modulation (PWM) and phase-locked loops (PLLs), typical of motor drive, voltage and current control and data acquisition systems.

The MAX5353BEPA+ consists of two separate components, the analog block and the digital block. The analog block consists of an 8-bit, bi-directional, dual 8-bit DAC core; a voltage reference; and a wide input range automatic gain control circuit. The digital block consists of an instruction bit, five data bits providing a total of 16-bits of resolution, and a five-bit input level selection circuit.

The digital block of the MAX5353BEPA+ contains a control word -- the first instruction bit specifies whether the DAC is being set for voltage or current output -- and the next five data bits are the gain. The instruction word is then followed by the 8-bit data word, which is decoded by the DAC core to provide the analog output voltage or current. The five-bit input level enables the user to match the input level to the expected output voltage or current range.

In applications that demand a current output, the MAX5353BEPA+ offers a peak current of 4mA with adjustable gain up to 16. It also supports a peak voltage output of 4V, adjustable gain up to 31. It features programmable error correction, temperature compensation, and slew rate control.

The MAX5353BEPA+ operates within a wide temperature range of -20C to 85C, making it suitable for both commercial and industrial applications. It is also highly efficient, consuming a maximum static power of only 7mW (at 5V supply voltage), making it more energy-efficient than most other DACs in its class.
