Digital potentiometers have been used increasingly in a wide range of applications. Electronic potentiometers are usually used to control the gain or attenuation setting of circuits, such as in volume control or balance control. However, they are also suitable for applications such as setting the output voltage of voltage regulators, automatic gain control, and adjusting the duty cycle of pulse generators. The MAX5387NAUD+T is a dual digital potentiometer which provides a range of control options for a variety of data acquisition applications.

The MAX5387NAUD+T contains two independent 10-bit digital potentiometers in an 8-pin TDFN package, making it ideal for applications where space is limited. It has two 10-bit wiper registers, one for each potentiometer, which can be read and written to via an SPI-compatible interface. The device is also able to operate from a voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V, making it suitable for a wide range of data acquisition applications ranging from low-voltage portable electronics to higher voltage industrial antennas.

The MAX5387NAUD+T also features an Auto-Zero function which reduces leakage current in each potentiometer to a minimum, increasing the effective resistance of the device and minimising noise. This makes the device extremely suitable for applications such as controlling the gain and attenuation of filters, adjusting the output voltage of amplifiers, and controlling the frequency of sinusoidal oscillators.

The device has an on-chip Power-up/power-down and recall functions which provide a convenient way to maintain a consistently low power consumption level and provide seamless operation. Additionally, the device is able to monitor its own temperature, ensuring that it does not overheat by automatically reducing its operating power when the temperature rises.

The MAX5387NAUD+T has a wide range of operating conditions, which makes it suitable for a variety of applications.
