The MAX5405EUB is a digital potentiometer and operates as a variable resistor with a 3-wire SPI-compatible serial interface. This device is optimized for audio applications and it offers a low terminal-to-terminal resistance variation and provides reliable operation with a wide range of temperature changes without requiring any compensation circuitry. It is a nonvolatile, single-channel, 1024-position digital potentiometer that connects directly to a host’s microcontroller.

Application Field

The MAX5405EUB is widely used in applications such as amplitude control, volume control, equalizer control (tone control), DC/DC converter control, phase-lockedloop (PLL) and phase control, and instrumentation systems. It is particularly suited for applications where a continuously adjustable resistor is required in the audio frequency range (20 tens of kHz).

Working Principle

At its core, the MAX5405EUB digital potentiometer is a resistor-divider network designed to divide an input voltage based on the setting on the device. The device consists of two terminals, "A" and "B", and a reference voltage, or wiper terminal. The wiper has a series of connections to a potentiometer consisting of a set of resistors and tapped paths for the voltage. When a logic input pin is set to a certain value, the wiper terminal is connected to one of the tapped paths, thus controlling the voltage division. Depending on the setting, the output voltage from the wiper terminal is adjusted relative to the input voltage.The device is operated by writing data to the input pins (D0-D7), which contains information such as the position of the wiper, mode, and address. The device can be accessed through the SPI bus, and is addressable to 8 addresses through the CSpin. After data is written to the device, the incoming data is stored in an internal register, which can be read out over the SPI bus.
