Data Acquisition - Digital Potentiometers Digital potentiometers are gaining increasing popularity as the majority of modern applications require precise control of the output voltage. The MAX5408EEE+ from Maxim Integrated is a digitally controlled electronic trimmed potentiometer (DPOT) with a maximum output resolution of 256 steps. It is an integrated, lockable non-volatile memory device that provides a wide range of features and functions for a variety of applications. The MAX5408EEE+ offers ultra-low offset error, fast start-up time, low noise, excellent tracking accuracy, low power consumption, and a wide range of operating temperatures. It is designed to replace traditional mechanical potentiometers with precision settings and much lower power consumption. The output voltage is generated by a push-pull differential amplifier circuit which converts a digital control voltage into an analog voltage. Working Principle The MAX5408EEE+ consists of an 8-bit digital potentiometer, a 256 tap EEPROM, and a 4-bit DAC. The EFUSE programmed ROM stores the output voltage, charging time, and input voltage range values. The digital potentiometer, along with the external digital control signals, can be used to adjust the gain and offset of the output voltage. The output voltage is determined by the digital control input signals and the EFUSE programmed ROM. The change in the control voltage programmable through the Digital Control Inputs (DCI) control the output voltage. The control voltage is translated into a digital output from the DAC, which is then divided into 256 steps. The output voltage is determined by the EFUSE ROM and the number of steps in the DAC. For example, when the DCI is 1110, the output voltage will be determined by the EFUSE ROM and the DAC output voltage range. The MAX5408EEE+ is an ideal choice for applications requiring precision and fast response. It is easy to use and can be configured for a variety of different applications.
