The device operates with a simple up/down-pulsing, push-button mechanism. The up/down-pulsing of the associated selection/control lines will choose the required number of resistances in the range The device is controlled by an off-chip digital signal that is voltage compatible with standard CMOS/TTL logic. The application of HIGH voltage on the wiper/reset end of the digital signal will reset the device to its minimum resistance level, while a LOW voltage signal will increase the resistance up to the maximum. The device has a low power consumption, low standby current and clocking speed of up to 400kHz.
