Power Over Ethernet (PoE) is becoming more popular as a means of delivering both power and data over the same network cables. It provides a more efficient, cost-effective and versatile way of providing power to a variety of devices including IP phones, webcams, access points and more. The MAX5922AEUI+ is a high efficiency, low cost, single-chip Power Over Ethernet (PoE) controller designed specifically for Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) applications.
The MAX5922AEUI+ utilizes a high-efficiency, auto-zero regulator with a wide input voltage range of 8.2 V to 40 V making it ideal for applications that require a wide input voltage range. The auto-zero regulator provides high efficiency (95%) and low power dissipation. The on-chip transformer consists of an auto-zero regulator built into the transformer package, enabling seamless integration of the transformer with no external circuit components. The transformer also includes circuitry that protects against over-voltage and over-temperature conditions, while providing automatic over-current protection.
The MAX5922AEUI+ can support up to 30 watts of PoE power and is compliant with the IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 PSE specification. The controller includes two voltage-mode control outputs, each with programmable peak and valley current limits. The four current limit settings provide flexibility to choose the peak and valley current according to the application requirements. The controller also provides accurate power monitoring of the active power and voltage and can be configured either to limit output power or to operate in open-loop mode.
The MAX5922AEUI+ also has an integrated temperature sensor and the ability to detect current imbalance conditions to protect itself from load conditions out of specification. In addition, the MAX5922AEUI+ has built-in protection against short circuit and over-voltage conditions. This enables the chip to protect itself from undesired conditions as per IEEE 802.3bt specification.
The MAX5922AEUI+ can be operated in both continuous and event-driven modes. The chip features integrated soft-start and brown-out protection, as well as an option to enable/disable the PoE power rail by using the Enable signal. The unique design of the MAX5922AEUI+ enables a much smaller board area requirement, making it suitable for compact, cost-effective solutions.
The MAX5922AEUI+ is widely used in Power over Ethernet applications including IP phones, webcams, access points, and PoE powered devices. It is designed to seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and can be operated in both continuous and event-driven operation modes. The power delivery and protection features of the MAX5922AEUI+ make it suitable for applications requiring high power delivery efficiency and protection.
