PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers

The MAX5975BETE+T is an offline switcher integrated circuit (IC) specifically designed for off-line AC/DC primary side regulation. It integrates a primary controller, optically-isolated power FETs, a frequency jittering block, a voltage monitor (VMON), an over-voltage/over-current-circuitry, as well as a shutdown/timer reset block. This IC provides a comprehensive solution for off-line applications such as external AC power adapter and set-top box (STB) power supplies.

Application Field

The MAX5975BETE+T can be used for many applications for controlling the primary-side stage of modern off-line AC/DC power supplies. This IC provides a customized solution for various power applications including: AC/DC primary-side regulation, low-power charging adapter, remote desktop power control, personal computer (PC) power supply, set-top box power application, laptop adapter, color painting machine, energy-saving lamps, laser printer, LED display panel, and medical instrumentation.

Working Principle

The MAX5975BETE+T provides an efficient power conversion solution with an embedded proprietary slope compensation-based primary-side regulation (PSR) technology to eliminate the need for an opto-coupler optical feedback loop. The PFC topology works as follows: The incoming AC voltage is rectified to DC voltage through the rectifier, which is then fed to a power factor correction (PFC) stage. After the PFC stage, the smoothed DC output is regulated to its preset level with Pulse-width Modulation (PWM), which is generated by the IC for the regulation purpose. And the IC also detects the output voltage, compares the detected voltage to its reference voltage, and adjusts the pulse width accordingly. When the voltage is over the reference voltage, the pulse width is decreased, when the voltage is under, then the pulse width will be increased to compensate the voltage and stabilize the output voltage.The functions of the MAX5975BETE+T include: Universal AC input voltage range; adjustable output voltage; low-ripple standby power; frequency jittering; multiple protections; wide temperature range operation; active burst-mode standby; high efficiency; low input power; and constant voltage over-current. The device is equipped with a wide variety of protection features such as short-circuit protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection. In addition, the MAX5975BETE+T also has a fast response time upon startup, which reduces the output inrush current.
