MAX608EPA+ Working Principle

The MAX608EPA+ works on the principle of switch-mode regulation. The IC features a low on-resistance MOSFET controller and internal power MOSFETs as a built-in power switch. The MAX608EPA+ includes a voltage reference and modulator, a PWM comparator, a current sense amplifier, a regulator, an overload detector, a temperature-compensated voltage reference, and protection against over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature faults. This IC also integrates an internal fixed-frequency oscillator and offers a wide range of output voltage settings, allowing the user to set the output voltage from 0.3V to 5.5V.

The PWM supply controller uses a user-set reference voltage to regulate the output voltage, by comparing it with a feedback signal derived from the output voltage. The reference voltage is compared with the output voltage feedback signal in the comparator circuit, and the output of the comparator is used to control the output of the MOSFET switch. The output voltage is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of the switch. The MOSFET switch operates at a fixed, user-specified frequency, thus providing a low EMI system.

The MAX608EPA+ also includes a unique programmable short-circuit protection feature called “adaptive on-time” (AOT). AOT works by allowing the user to program an external resistor that determines the maximum on-time of the MOSFET switch. This feature helps protect the system from over-current faults and ensures the system operates without excessive power dissipation.
