It is an efficient, cost-effective, and reliable solution for providing regulated voltage in a variety of consumer and portable electronic devices.The device combines a buck switching regulator, protection features, and battery charge-control circuitry in a 3.8mm² surface-mount package. The built-in boost circuitry that controls the battery charging rate is highly configurable and permits proper charging of a wide variety of battery chemistries, including Li-ion and NiCd, without external components. It supports both forward and reverse boost operations.The buck regulator is optimized for a wide input voltage range from 0.7V to 12.5V, allowing it to be used with a single Li-ion cell or two Alkaline cells. The combination of the boost and buck regulators can provide a regulated output voltage from 0.7V to 16V. The buck regulator utilizes pulse-width modulated (PWM) current-mode control and a proprietary analog regulation loop for tight regulation over line and load variations.The MAX638AESA+ incorporates a low-power mode with low quiescent current to extend battery life in stand-by operations. In this mode, the quiescent current consumption is reduced to 100nA. The device further features over-voltage protection with programmable trip threshold, fold back current limit and over-temperature protection with hysteretic control.The MAX638AESA+ is available in a small 3.8mm² QFN package, making it a very attractive solution for space-constrained applications. It is well-suited for a variety of battery-powered consumer electronics, such as cellular phones and digital cameras.
