PMIC - Supervisors are power management integrated circuits (PMICs) which offer a portfolio of single and multicore architectures for a wide range of applications. From traditional SOFTack one-shot supervisor ICs to sophisticated Supervisory Circuits (SCCs) and Precision Voltage Supervisors (PVS), these are the important components used to ensure reliable power is delivered when systems are subjected to extreme temperature and voltage variations.

The MAX6386LT33D4+T is a precision voltage detection IC which was designed to detect and monitor the supply voltage in an isolated +3.3V system powered with a 2.7V to 4.5V battery. Used extensively in medical and other high-reliability applications, it incorporates a precision low-power comparator and an internal adjustable reference voltage (VREF) enabling tight detection threshold tolerance. The other features embedded in this IC are a delay-on-make interval, power-on reset (POR) output delay, and an output push-pull or open-drain selection. All of these features, along with the various modes of operation, make it suitable for mission-critical applications.

The IC includes an integrated power-on reset (POR) output that supports active-high POR, active-low POR, and both parameters. POR output indicates when VIN (input voltage) is within the specified voltage range. It offers a delay-on-make interval per the user-specified voltage level, hysteresis, and output push-pull or open drain modes of operation. The delay-on-make interval can extend up to 80ms.

The MAX6386LT33D4+T also features dual adjustable thresholds and offers three modes of operation: single threshold, dual threshold, and watchdog/window detector modes. In single threshold mode, the user must set an adjustable threshold with the available 5-bit external resistor divider or use the internal 0.5V reference voltage. The voltage across the threshold will adjust due to thermal drift, hence the user must ensure that it’s recalibrated periodically.

Dual threshold mode is used to detect a wide range of supply voltages for two different and independent voltage levels with a single device. The two thresholds will be indicated through two distinct outputs. One of the outputs will show the result of a rising-VIN and the other will show the result of a falling-VIN. When the voltage exceeds the VREF voltage, the user can expect a POR (Power-On-Reset) output.

The watchdog/window detector mode is used for conventional watchdog applications by setting the two thresholds at the same level, enabling the user to detect any variation in supply voltage. One of the output pins (POR/WD) will indicate a time-out event on either of the thresholds and reset the application.

The MAX6386LT33D4+T IC can be used in a wide range of applications such as in office, home and industrial automation, digital cameras, plasma, LCD, and LED TVs, cell phone chargers, and nonvolatile storage solutions. Its major application is in critical-care medical equipments. It provides reliable, low-power and high accuracy for these applications. With a power consumption of 0.1mW and over seven decades of supply voltage range, the MAX6386LT33D4+T is the ideal choice for these applications.
