MAX6789TB+T is a highly integrated Application Specific Power IC (ASP IC) from Maxim Integrated, which offers a comprehensive system solution for comprehensive battery management applications. This single IC minimizes the need for multiple components when designing a power management solution and provides a complete battery charging and monitoring system suitable for various mobile and portable electronic products such as cell phones, PDAs, media players, cameras, cordless phones and so on. It contains a high-level battery charger with an adjustable current limit, a voltage monitoring system, a real-time battery discharge/charge current measurement system, an adjustable thermal management system, an over-temperature/over-current/over-voltage/under-voltage protection, and a gas gauge system which includes efficient Coulomb counter circuit.Application Field

The MAX6789TB+T integrates several features perfect for efficient battery management. It features a High-Level Battery Charger which has an adjustable current limit that allows for variable charge currents, a voltage monitoring system for automatically detecting and monitoring battery overvoltage or undervoltage condtions, a real-time battery discharge/charge current measurement system to accurately measure, monitor and record the amount of current from and to the battery, an adjustable thermal management system which prevents overheating by controlling charge current and charge voltage levels, an over-temperature/over-current/over-voltage/under-voltage protection for protecting against short circuit and other anomalies, and a gas gauge system which includes efficient Coulomb counter circuit, a voltage sensing and gaseous peak level detection and a time-to-empty indicator.Working Principle
The MAX6789TB+T is powered by a low-voltage input source, typically a Li-ion or Li-Po battery. When the voltage at the input power source exceeds the specified level, the charger will start charging the battery. The charger is integrated with an adjustable current limit that regulates the maximum allowed current it draw and charges the battery accordingly. The voltage at the output of the charger is monitored by the voltage monitoring system and will shut down when it detects an over-voltage condition. The real-time current measurement system accurately measure, monitor and record the amount of current from and to the battery and the Adjustable Thermal Management System is integrated to prevent the battery from overheating.The built-in coulomb counter Circuit also records and accumulates the integrated current passing through the battery. By adding/subtracting the charges passing to/from the battery, the coulomb counter circuit can identify when the battery needs to be charged or discharged. Additionally, the MAX6789TB+T also features Over-temperature/Over-current/Over-voltage/Under-Voltage protections to prevent potential damage from anomalies.Conclusion
