A supervisor management IC is an electronic device that actively monitors power supplies, and activates a reset signal if an abnormal supply voltage condition is detected. The MAX6791TPLD0+T is a high-accuracy, low-power multi-voltage supervisor for monitoring multiple power supplies in system applications, including advanced telecommunication systems, industrial machinery and computer systems.

The working principle of the MAX6791TPLD0+T is straightforward. It monitors two supply voltages, VAA and VBB, as well as power supply slew rates. In the event of any abnormal supply conditions, the MAX6791TPLD0+T issues an active reset output signal, which is maintained until the supply voltage conditions return to the normal range. Reset is delayed sufficiently to accommodate power-up ramp times. If a timeout occurs after the active reset is issued, the MAX6791TPLD0+T will issue an inactive reset signal.

The MAX6791TPLD0+T incorporates an onboard oscillator, which can be used to generate an accurate time delay for toggling the reset signal. This oscillator can be configured to run on any of the supply voltages, either VAA or VBB. The reset signal is active low, but can be inverted via the “RESET” signal pin. The MAX6791TPLD0+T also includes an “OPEN” input pin which allows external reset sources, such as a safety processor, to be connected directly to the reset signal.
The watchdog circuit of the MAX6791TPLD0+T is the most important function, with an active-high timeout period selectable between 5.12ms and 255.968ms. The watchdog timer monitors an active-high input on the “DOG” pin. If the input stays low for longer than the selected timeout, the timer will issue an active reset signal. The watchdog timer is reset by pulsing the “DOG” pin low or by issuing a manual reset via the “MR” pin.
The MAX6791TPLD0+T also includes a power failure detector with a selectable trip threshold. The power failure detector will issue a reset signal when the supply Voltage falls below the trip threshold voltage and remains there for a minimum of 8ms. The trip threshold is selectable between 1.1V and 3.5V.
