MAX696EPE+ PMIC - Supervisors Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC - Supervisors are intelligent devices that often monitor and maintain communication between several different types of integrated circuits (ICs). They perform complicated functions effectively, providing precision voltage and power control within the power management system. Supervisors are typically used to manage the power management system within computers, communications systems, and other delicate electronic equipment. In addition to providing power control, supervisors may be used to protect ICs from fluctuations in voltage, detect rogue signals, and enable stand-by mode. The MAX696EPE+ Microprocessor Supervisory Circuit (MAX696EPE+) is a compact, versatile supervisor IC is particularly suitable for reset designs in a wide array of handheld and portable equipment, such as PC-laptop, PDAs, cell phones, and digital cameras. Its advanced features address microprocessor power system design challenges with cost-effective, reliable device monitoring. The MAX696EPE+ contains a built-in voltage detector that provides high precision monitoring of power supply rails, as well as adjustable reset delays, pushbutton-initiated reset, and manual override reset. The MAX696EPE+ also has an adjustable POR-L latch threshold, which provides a real-time indication of the power supply’s condition. Additionally, the circuit includes a watchdog timer and manual reset button input pins. The MAX696EPE+ is capable of generating a reset signal when the system voltage falls below a factory-configured or user-adjustable threshold. A master reset latch maintained by the MAX696EPE+ prevents unintentional reset signals from generating reset when the supply voltage returns to appropriate levels. To protect ICs from sudden voltage spikes, the MAX696EPE+ uses an electronic voltage-clamping circuit, eliminating the need for an external snap-back diode. Additionally, the MAX696EPE+ incorporates an auto-discharge feature that disables the reset latch and reset outputs under open drain/open collector conditions. The built-in low power consumption enabled by the MAX696EPE+ reduces the power consumption in standby mode. The watchdog timer can issue periodic reset pulses which reduce power consumption and ensure the chip remains in its initialized state. The MAX696EPE+ has two pin-saver modes that can be enabled when a reset is issued. In timeout mode, power-on reset (POR) is asserted if a reset fails to finish within a user-defined timer period. In low-voltage detection mode, power-on reset (POR) is asserted if the input voltage falls below a user-defined threshold in the absence of an external reset. This device is provided in a lead-free, space-saving 5-pins SOT23-5 package and operates over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.
