The MAX7300A/A+/AA+/AAI+/AB+/ABE/+T are low-voltage, low-power, I/O expanders for I 2 C and SMBus applications. The devices are optimized for use in portable and battery-powered products such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, GPS receivers and other applications with limited power resources. By enabling the user to have one I 2 C/SMBus master device control multiple slave devices, the MAX7300A+/AA+/AAI+/AB+/ABE/+T can reduce system cost and current consumption over discrete solutions.
The MAX7300A+/AB+/ABE/+T are +3.3V-only, 14-bit I/O expander with configurable and open-drain I/Os, buffered input and output, wakeup functionality, interrupt/reset outputs and an interrupt-based synchronization feature that helps minimize system power consumption. The MAX7300AAI+T adds an internal timer with open-drain polarity and an analog input. The single-input, configurable and open-drain pins are fully configurable for input, output, interrupt and reset functions.
The MAX7300AAI+T combines an I 2 C-compatible bus and the enhanced features of the MAX7300A+/AB+/ABE/+T with an internal analog-to-digital converter, 8-bit timer and open-drain pulse-width modulator. The MAX7300AAI+T can also detect changes in analog voltage levels as low as ±0.05V. The internal 8-bit timer can generate interrupts at a programmable rate of up to 90kHz.
The MAX7300AAI+T uses the I 2 C bus protocol. All of the data and control signals are addressed by 7-bit slave registers, with the MAX7300 itself being addressed by a 7-bit address that can be user-programmed. Each I/O pin is configurable as an input, output or interrupt pin. The device is powered over the V DD terminal from 1.7V to 5.5V.
In addition to acting as an I/O expander, the MAX7300AAI+T can also wake up the system by generating an interrupt when an analog input exceeds a certain threshold. The interrupt signal will invoke a hardware interrupt and an interrupt request (INT). This interrupt can then be used to wake the system up from power modes such as standby or hibernate.
The MAX7300AAI+T is ideal for applications that require the interfacing of different types of peripherals, including LEDs, pushbuttons, rotary encoders, sensors and other types of devices that use open-drain I/O. For example, the MAX7300AAI+T can be used to drive an LED display with 10 LEDs, an audio speaker with 2-4 LEDs, and a rotary encoder with 2 buttons and 3 LEDs. The MAX7300AAI+T can also be used to sense the position of a rotary switch or the voltage level of a battery.
The MAX7300AAI+T is an ideal choice for applications that require low power, low-frequency operation. The device has an ultra-low quiescent current of only 0.15mA, and an operating current of 1.25mA. It also has an operating frequency of 1MHz, which allows it to interface with I 2 C and SMBus devices that have a maximum clock rate of 400kHz.
The MAX7300AAI+T is an ideal device for applications that require the interfacing of multiple peripherals with different types of I/O and a low current consumption.
