Interface - I/O Expanders are fundamental peripherals for processing data generated from several components and providing the capability to a system to interface with a wide range of devices. In this article, we will take a look at one of the I/O Expanders out there - the MAX7300ANI+ Applied Field and Working Principle.
The MAX7300ANI+ is a high-performance I/O expander controlled through a two-wire digital open-drain, or two-wire or three-wire serial communications interface. It provides 11 pins with both direction capable of detecting input signals or generating output signals. When the microcontroller wishes to transmit a logic high, it sends a logic low to the MAX7300ANI+. The MAX7300ANI+ then switches the transistor to connect the output pin to ground. Conversely, when the microcontroller wishes to transmit a logic low, it sends a logic high to the MAX7300ANI+. The MAX7300ANI+ then switches the transistor to connect the output pin to VDD.
The open-drain configuration is ideal for an I/O expander because it allows multiple devices to share the same communication bus. By setting up a common voltage supply and connected the I/O Expander with the high impedance of the microcontroller, it is able to transfer data over a long distance while maintaining robust communication. Furthermore, since the logic level of the output pin is controlled by the microcontroller, it allows the MAX7300ANI+ to interface with higher voltage levels than those supported by a traditional I/O port.
The MAX7300ANI+ also provides a series of independent output interrupts, allowing it to detect and respond to changes in an input pin’s logic state. This is useful for informing the microcontroller when an input switch is pressed, allowing the microcontroller to take the necessary actions based on the change in logic state. It also supports external interrupts, allowing the MAX7300ANI+ to control the interrupt requests from multiple devices.
