Lately, power management integrated circuits (PMICs) have been finding wider applications, specially in LED Drivers.One of the recently released PMICs specifically designed to provide direct current (DC) drive to white-light LEDs is the MAX7302AEE+T.

The MAX7302AEE+T is an integrated step-up current mode DC−DC controller and constant-current output buffer (rail smoother) for driving high power LEDs. It is designed to smoothly drive high power white LEDs from a single constant-current source.

Voltage to current conversion of this chip is done by a partial reset flyback controller utilizing its pulse-skip, burst-mode and selectable PWM interface operating at a switching frequency up to 1.2 MHz. It features a constant frequency current mode control to ensure stable operation over a wide range of output capacitance and load conditions.

The current-mode operation of the MAX7302AEE+T has excellent line and load regulation. This device is particularly suitable for driving white LEDs without alteration of the lumens output throughout entire line voltage range typical in automotive applications.

If the voltage or power supplied is insufficient to drive the LEDs, the MAX7302AEE+T senses the output current and enters a pulse-skipping mode to reduce the LED current while maintaining the LED output voltage. The combination of the controllers with synchronous rectification driver reduces the controller and bridge losses, thus reducing the power dissipation.

Not only are the MAX7302AEE+T’s cost-effective and energy-efficient, but it is also designed to offer a wide range of protective features. It has an adjustable, foldback current limit, thermal shutdown as well as programmable undervoltage/overvoltage protection. The MAX7302AEE+T provides good system-level protection against miswiring and latched disconnects, so it can be safely connected to automotive applications.
