MAX72024C+ is an advanced power management IC that has been used by designers to drive up to 3A of continuous load current in a range of applications such as motor control, portable equipment, and consumer electronics. Compared to the older MAX7201A, the MAX72024C+ has several improved features including higher maximum DC bus voltage (24V) and higher internal power dissipated (25W). Upon closer examination, the internal structure and operating principles of the MAX72024C+ can be discerned as a wide bandgap power management integrated circuit (PMIC).

The MAX72024C+ integrates a PMIC and power management subcircuits on a single chip. It is composed of an internal charge pump, low dropout (LDO) regulator, switching converter, DC/DC converter, boost voltage regulator, inverting voltage regulator, and two independent overvoltage / overcurrent detection circuits. It is also equipped with an analog input port, two voltage reference inputs, three power switches, and four digital logic/timing inputs. The MAX72024C+ offers a wide operating supply voltage range of 4.5V to 24V, making it suitable for a variety of single-cell or dual-cell battery solutions.

The internal PMIC of the MAX72024C+ utilizes an N-channel metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) configuration to regulate the voltage supplied to the load. A pair of charge pumps in the PMIC convert a single voltage input to an intermediate voltage, which is then regulated to the desired voltage presented to the load. The effect of this configuration is that the output voltage remains steady and independent regardless of the load condition. This approach eliminates the need for expensive external components and allows designers to reduce the total size of the application.

The internal switching converter of the MAX72024C+ uses a buck-boost topology that enables it to boost the voltage from any input source, while also converting buck or boost converter topologies as required. The MAX72024C+ includes two independent overvoltage/overcurrent protection circuits that detect and protect against excessive input/output voltages/currents, making it ideal for applications requiring high reliability. The wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C further adds to its appeal as a versatile solution for many different application designs.
