The MAX7321ATE+ I/O expander offers a wide range of features and functions. It utilizes a 2-wire, half-duplex, serial interface that enables communication between the microcontroller and the MAX7321ATE+ expander. The expander also includes a 1-wire (3-wire) interface that allows up to 8 I/O pins to be controlled. To reduce power consumption, the MAX7321ATE+ features a power-saving mode when no activity is detected on the bus, as well as an active-low interrupt pin to alert the microcontroller when data transfers occur. The MAX7321ATE+ also offers a parallel-to-serial interface to allow for the transfer of data from parallel devices such as FPGAs and CPLDs. Additionally, the MAX7321ATE+ comes with an I2C slave-transmitter interface, allowing for integration with a wide variety of other I2C-capable devices.
The working principle of the MAX7321ATE + is fairly straightforward. The microcontroller sends an instruction to the MAX7321ATE+ over the serial interface. The MAX7321ATE+ then begins executing the instruction, whether it be to configure the I/O, read from or write to the I/O, or initiate a parallel-to-serial data transfer. If the I/O is configured for an active-low interrupt, the MAX7321ATE+ will inform the microcontroller when I/O interrupts occur, allowing the microcontroller to react appropriately. The MAX7321ATE+ will also monitor the I2C bus for commands from the slave I2C devices if the MAX7321ATE+ is set to slave-transmitter mode.
