Interface - I/O Expanders are specialized ICs used to extend the available input/output pins on a system. Among them, MAX7322AEE+ are some of the most popular I/O expander ICs available in the market. It is a CMOS, 8-bit I/O port expander for I2C bus- and SPI-compatible applications. It provides 8-bit parallel I/O expansion for the two-wire I2C serial bus or the SPI serial bus. Moreover, this device has hot insertion capability to prevent bus contention when the system power returns. The MAX7322AEE+ has eight pins each comprising of two schmitt-trigger inputs and one open-drain output. The open-drain outputs allow us to connect directly LEDs, relays and other such loads. Another great benefit is the open-drain outputs featured in the MAX7322AEE+, which supersedes the need for additional buffer chips, as open-drain output can be easily connected to any 3V or 5V logic with no additional buffer chips. The MAX7322AEE+ also features a hardwired I2C bus address that is factory-programmed to allow different configurations so that a single bus can handle up to 8 of these expander ICs.

The MAX7322AEE+ is also an ideal choice in applications such as panel interface, application processor and microcontroller I/O expansion, Audio and Video SCART switch, pattern recognition, consumer and industrial lighting, automation, minicomputer interface and switch matrix.
