Interface - I/O Expanders
The MAX7326AEG+ is a high-performance port expander which is a member of the interface-I/O expanders family. An I/O (Input/Output) Expander is an integrated circuit chip that allows the addition of extra Input/Output ports without implementing additional processor pins when interfacing with a system. In other words, an I/O Expander bridges between a processor, microcontroller or microprocessor with limited number of I/O pins, and additional temporary I/O connections to off-chip peripherals.
The MAX7326AEG+ has 8 pins which provide buffered inputs, buffered outputs and high current outputs. The chip comprises of a 4-bit wide multiplexed input/output pin bank that provides an idividual direction control to each pin. The port pins are organized into 2 separate I/O ports, wherein each port can be independently configured as either input or output. The two ports, called Port A and Port B, each consist of four bidirectional I/O lines.

The MAX7326AEG+ is mainly used in portable and low power applications such as handheld battery powered devices, mobile phone peripherals, baseband and RF I/O, wearable electronics, remote control receivers, power supply control, HID (Human Interface Device) control, cameras and digital media player accessories. The device requires only 0.75mA of supply current (at 3.3V) and offers thermal shutdown protection.
Working Principle of the MAX7326AEG+
The I/O ports of the MAX7326AEG+ operate in either the 8-bit port mode or the single-pin port mode. In 8-bit port mode, operation is basically the same as a port on a microcontroller: each bit is defined as either input (I) or output (O). Data can be read from GPIO pins in input mode, or written to pins in output mode. When operating in single-pin port mode, the device operates either as an input or an output, meaning that a single port can be used to communicate with other digital devices.
The MAX7326AEG+ has two different kinds of I/O cycles: read and write. During a read cycle, the I/O pin value is read and stored in the local register. During a write cycle, the I/O pin is driven with the value of the local register. This write-read cycle enables the device to send digital data or receive data from an external peripheral device, such as an LCD display.
The MAX7326AEG+ also provides an interrupt capability that requires less pin usage. The device is equipped with 3 configurable interrupt mask registers, which can be used to mask any number of bits in the port, depending on the application. This reduces both the number of pins needed to be connected from the processor and the I/O operation time in the code. The MAX7326AEG+ can be operated in either the 3.3V or 5V logic voltage range.
