The MAX756CSA+ is a versatile DC-DC switching regulator specifically designed to reduce power dissipation in sensitive applications where output currents are low. This device is especially suitable for powering applications including cell phones, smart phones, ultra-mobile personal computers, and digital cameras. The MAX756CSA+ features an integrated N-Channel MOSFET that enables high efficiency designs with low quiescent current.
The MAX756CSA+ is a highly efficient, low quiescent current, synchronous step-down DC-DC switching regulator. It is designed to operate from a 3V to 6V input supply and deliver up to 1A output current. The device integrates a top-side Switched MOSFET which reduces conduction losses, allowing it to achieve high efficiencies. In addition, the MAX756CSA+ provides internal current limit, thermal shut down protection and an adjustable output voltage from 0.8 Volt to 3.3 Volt.

In PWM mode, the switching frequency can be set from 1kHz up to 500kHz for various applications. At light loads, the device enters a low-ripple power-saving PFM mode. The low-ripple power-saving PFM automatically maintains the highest possible efficiency regardless of load conditions.
The typical application of the MAX756CSA+ is shown in Figure 1, using a 4.7µH inductor, 0.22µF ceramic capacitor, and 10µF ceramic capacitor in the output. The output voltage is accurately regulated by setting the ADJUST pin voltage with an external voltage divider. The output voltage of the MAX756CSA+ can be adjusted by varying the resistance of the voltage divider connected to the ADJUST pin. The control loop is designed to reduce output voltage ripple and provide fast transient response.
In addition to a 500kHz switching frequency, the MAX756CSA+ implements a programmable current-limit feature to protect against short-circuit conditions. The current-limit feature of the MAX756CSA+ is adjustable by a single external resistor connected to the CURLIM pin. A low cost 2MHz crystal, connected by the XTAL pin, may also be used to ensure better regulation of the output voltage.
The MAX756CSA+ includes a shutdown control pin that is used to turn the device off in a controlled manner. When this pin is pulled low, the switch is disabled and current flow through the output path stops. In addition, input current is reduced to a negligible level during shutdown, minimizing static power consumption.
The MAX756CSA+ is available in an 8-pin TDFN package that is designed to minimize external components and package-on-package parasitic induction. The package uses a low profile 3mm x 3mm body with a 0.75mm exposed copper pad that also increases thermal performance. The package also features a four-layer PCB design which increases the dissipation power rating.
