Working Principle:

The MAX763ACSA+T is a peak-current mode DC/DC converter that operates in an open-loop configuration. The output current is sensed by an internal current-sense resistor and monitored by two comparators. These comparators sample the reset voltage (Vref) and the current-sense voltage. The reference voltage is internally set to 0.85V, and it increases proportionally to the output voltage. The current-sense comparator sample the voltage across a P-channel MOSFET’s internal current-sense resistor. When the current-sense voltage exceeds the reference voltage, a pulse is generated by the comparator and inverted by a buffer. The pulses output by the buffer are used to switch the P-channel MOSFET synchronously. By controlling the duty cycle (or the on time) of the P-channel MOSFET, the average output current is regulated at the desired level.

When the load current decreases the output voltage begins to increase. When the output voltage increases the reference voltage also increases which causes the peak current to decrease. This reduced peak current turns the MOSFET off earlier and decreases the switching frequency. All these actions are done simultaneously and continuously in order to maintain the output voltage as close to the desired level as possible. Thus, the MAX763ACSA+T ensures fast load and line transient response and excellent line/load regulation.

The MAX763ACSA+T includes a soft-start capacitor that limits the MOSFET on-time when the IC is powered up. This feature controls the in-rush current and prevents peak current overshoot. During the soft-start period, the MOSFET on-time increases gradually until it reaches the value that corresponds to the desired output voltage.
