The MAX766MJA is a high-performance step-down DC-DC switching regulator for space-sensitive applications. It features a wide operating input voltage range of 2.7V to 28V, adjustable output voltage down to 0.68V at up to 1A output current, low quiescent current of 11µA typical and fast transient response. The MAX766MJA provides high efficiency, excellent load transient characteristics and low EMI noise. The MAX766MJA also includes a wide range of features such as soft-start, frequency synchronization, under-voltage lock-out, current limit, and thermal shutdown. The device is available in a small QFN-20 package with an ultra-low profile of 0.8mm.
The MAX766MJA is ideal for space-sensitive applications such as industrial, automotive, consumer, communication, healthcare, and computer/networking applications. Its low quiescent current and wide input/output voltage range make it ideal for battery-powered, portable electronic devices and other space-sensitive applications. Its low output voltage and fast transient response also make it well suited for a wide range of applications, including powering analog and digital circuits, motor control, and lighting.
The MAX766MJA uses a current-mode, PWM control architecture. In this architecture, a transistor switch is connected in series with an inductor and the load, with a diode connected in parallel for energy recovery during switch-off cycles. The voltage across the inductor is sensed by an error amplifier and is used to regulate the voltage applied to the switch\'s gate. The load current is sensed by an internal current-sense amplifier, which is used to regulate the on-time of the switch. The on-time and frequency are adjusted by varying the duty cycle of the signal applied to the switch\'s gate, thereby regulating the output voltage of the regulator.
The output voltage is adjustable via an external voltage-divider network. The operating frequency is adjustable via an external resistor network, and the device can be synchronized to an external signal. The soft-start function prevents unwanted inrush currents due to large capacitive loads by limiting the slew rate of the output voltage during start-up.
