This is basically a process of taking a non-constant voltage input such as a battery and outputting a regulated voltage or current. Synchronous buck conversion works by using an internal comparator that looks at the voltage at the output of the voltage-regulator and compares it to a reference voltage. When the voltage at the output of the regulator is higher than the reference voltage, the comparator signals the regulator to reduce the output voltage until it is the same as the reference voltage. When the voltage at the output of the regulator is lower than the reference voltage the comparator signals the regulator to increase the output voltage until it is the same as the reference voltage. Therefore, the regulator maintains an output voltage that is equal to the reference voltage.
