The MAX9012EUA is a linear-comparator that operates in the voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V. It has five different operating modes, which can easily adapt the application to the exact requirements. The MAX9012EUA is capable of operating with temperatures as low as - 40°C and as high as 125°C.
The MAX9012EUA is designed to provide a voltage reference level for an analog signal received from a single supply. It is most commonly used in systems that need to detect a shift in an analog signal from its quiescent level. These applications can range from audio systems, instrumentation systems, and more.
One of the first tasks in a design process, which relies on the MAX9012EUA, is to choose the reference voltage, which will be compared against the input signal with the MAX9012EUA. A difference in the voltage is detected when it exceeds the +/-150mV hysteresis level given by the device. Depending on the application, different hysteresis levels might be better. This can be obtained using the HYS pin.
The MAX9012EUA requires both a VCC reference voltage and ground (GND) in order to operate correctly. The VCC reference voltage should be between 2.4V to 5.5V while the ground should remain constant.The device operates using either a current source or current sink comparison technique. If the input signal is greater then the reference voltage, the current source compare method is used and current will flow out of the output terminal. If the input signal is less then the reference voltage, the current sink compare method is used and current will flow into the output terminal. The current source compare method is enabled when the EN pin is active.
The MAX9012EUA is able to provide a wide range of output options such as open-drain, open-collector, push-pull and complementary outputs. It is important to note that the open-drain and open-collector output modes require an external pull-up resistor. The external pull-up resistor is required for the device to drive the output to a High state after the input signal has exceeded the reference voltage. The MAX9012EUA can also be used in a low-power mode, where the current consumption is reduced to 1µA.
The MAX9012EUA also packs multiple safety and protection features : Overvoltage protection of 7V, ESD protection up to 2000Vd, Reverse voltage protection, Transient protection, and Thermal overload protection.In summary, the MAX9012EUA is a highly versatile linear-comparator that can be used in a variety of applications. It provides a reliable solution for voltage monitoring and switching, and can handle extreme temperatures and transients. By default, the device is supplied with an integrated reference voltage, however an external reference voltage can be used for specialized applications.
