The MAX9378EUA+T is a bi-directional gate-level translator circuit that can be integrated into numerous conversion applications in both directions. It is a high-speed, low-power, low-voltage reversible logic-level translator specifically designed for two-wire bidirectional level-shifting applications. The +T version of the MAX9378EUA+T provides an internal 300Ω pull-up and pull-down resistor for each data line, allowing for optimal noise suppression in each data path.

The MAX9378EUA+T acts as a bridge between devices operating at different supply and I/O voltage levels. It converts logical 1 (high) and 0 (low) levels between voltage domains, and is frequently used to connect the 1.8V logic standard to the 3.3V logic standard. It is particularly beneficial, if two systems must communicate but the logic levels of their portion of the channel are incompatible. The switch contains two ports that request bidirectional translation of logic levels between two buses. These two buses are referred to as the lower bus (L) and the higher bus (H).

The MAX9378EUA+T supports low-voltage (LVDs) and 5V logic which often simplifies interface design and increases the protection for bus receiver circuits. It is an ideal choice for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and embedded systems, as well as for hot plugging of multi-voltage devices.

The MAX9378EUA+T can be used in applications such as serial/parallel port expansion and interface logic, as well as in digital power conversion, protocol bridging, automotive, and other embedded logic application fields. With its wide operating voltage range (1.2V to 5.5V), the device can be used in a variety of applications. It is also the perfect choice for any user-selectable 3.3V/5V applications where level shifting combined with bus buffering is required.

The working principle for this device is to enable the transfer of digital signals between two different voltage levels. It does this by translating a level in one voltage domain to a level in the other voltage domain. The circuit consists of one pass transistor and two high-speed logic buffers on each side, connected with two pass transistors. The logic level of the “upstream” logic device is switched/translated to the logic level of the “downstream” logic device. The pass transistors not only serve as a buffer between the two voltage domains, but also provide isolation between the buses. In addition, each data line is protected from excessive current by the built-in current limit feature.

The MAX9378EUA+T is the ideal choice for signal level translation up to 250MHz. It provides superior noise immunity, enhanced signal integrity, and high signal-switching speed. In addition, the device is pin compatible with the industry-standard 5V-tolerant MAX9378EUA, meaning it is a drop-in replacement.
