MAX984ESE-T

The MAX984ESE-T is a low-power comparator from Maxim Integrated. It is a single high-speed, low-power comparator with an extended temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. As a low power device, the total supply current is only 350μA, so it suits very well a wide variety of portable and battery-powered applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, notebooks, and PCs. The device offers high level of integration, including a pin-programmable fixed 10mV or 100mV hysteresis, maximum-power-down detection, and +1.14V start-up threshold.

Applications

The dedicated applications for MAX984ESE-T are: over-temperature protection, limit-value control and fast comparator. Working Principle

The MAX984ESE-T contains an analysis amplifier with a voltage input. The analysis amplifier compares the voltage on the non-inverting terminal (V+) and the voltage on the inverting terminal (V-). The output state of the analysis amplifier depends on the respective voltages:

• If V+ > V -, the output is ‘HIGH’.
• Otherwise, if V+ ≤ V-, the output is ‘LOW’.

The hysteresis can be configured by an external resistor between the Rset and ground pins. By selecting this resistor, the difference between the rising and falling thresholds VH and VL can be defined. This hysteresis facilitates the prevention of output chattering if the analog input is close to the switching point. The comparator’s input protection is measured as the difference between V- and V+ and is guaranteed to be less than 80V.
