Mica and PTFE Capacitors

Mica and PTFE capacitors are one type of high-performance capacitors used in power supply, AC/DC rectification, and RF applications. Found in both variable and fixed capacitance, these capacitors are constructed of layers of ceramic dielectric material and two metal conducting layers, covered with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) protective coating. Thanks to its extremely low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and dielectric absorption characteristics, the MC12FA500F-TF offers superior performance in high frequency applications. Additionally, its long term stability and robust construction make it an ideal choice for high performance, high reliability applications.The MC12FA500F-TF consists of two sheets of metal foil, with ceramic dielectric material sandwiched between, and encased in a continuous layer of PTFE. This layer of PTFE serves as an insulating casing, improving the capacitor’s dielectric absorption characteristics while providing protection from corrosion and other environmental factors. Thanks to its high insulation voltage, the MC12FA500F-TF is capable of withstanding up high voltages, up to 1650VAC, which makes it well suited for applications such as switch-mode power supplies and motor controllers.In operation, the ceramic dielectric material sandwiched between the two metal foils acts as a dielectric, allowing the capacitor to store an electric charge. This electric charge is proportional to the amount of ceramic dielectric material and length of the metal foil layer. The electric charge stored inside the capacitor is then discharged when a voltage is applied across its leads. This process enables the capacitor to act as an electrical filter, eliminating high frequency signals while passing lower frequency ones.The MC12FA500F-TF also features an improved temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, making it ideal for high temperature applications such as those found in industrial motor controllers. Additionally, the MC12FA500F-TF also has excellent dynamic characteristics, thanks to its low ESR and high ripple current ratings.
