The MC14516BDG is an integrated, dual 4-bit, bidirectional synchronous up/down counter. It has two independent bidirectional synchronous up/down 4-bit counters with independent loads and clear inputs which can be used to access different types of memory cells. The MC14516BDG also includes two sets of reset, serial data input (SDI), serial data output (SDO), and flip-flop clock input (FCI) terminals.

The device is used for a wide range of applications, such as digital electronic speedometers and tachometers, digital signal processing, pulse width modulation and high-speed data sampling. The MC14516BDG can also be used to generate digital clock signals from a reference frequency, providing an ideal means for controlling digital clocks.

The MC14516BDG basically works by shifting data from the serial data inputs (SDI) to the serial data outputs (SDO) when a positive edge of the flip-flop clock input (FCI) signal is received. The device is composed of two independent sections, each with its own clock inputs (FCI1 and FCI2), data inputs (SDI1 and SDI2) and data outputs (SDO1 and SDO2).

At each clock transition, the data inputs SDI1 and SDI2 are read and their outputs SDO1 and SDO2 are updated accordingly. An asynchronous reset (Rx) is provided for each counter so that the two counters can be reset independently. The reset inputs for each counter must be at logic “1” for the counters to count. Data loaded into the counter latches is sampled into the synchronous up/down counters at a positive edge of the clock input. Data loaded can be either in binary or Gray code.

The MC14516BDG also includes a latch allow mode that allows one counter to count fully while the other counter is latched. In this mode, data is loaded into the second counter, and then the latch allows the first counter to count fully. After the first counter has counted down, its output latches the data to the second counter, allowing it to count without interruption.

The MC14516BDG includes a dual synchronous preset for fast initialization of the up/down counters. A single clock in the respective FCI inputs will load any predetermined data into the counter latches.

For applications requiring measurement of relative time between events, the MC14516BDG provides two sets of input gates with both synchronous and asynchronous inputs, allowing for pulse width and accuracy measurement. The synchronous inputs are used for high accuracy measurements, while the asynchronous inputs are used for low accuracy measurements.
