The MC14538BDTR2G is a bilateral phase-shift oscillator comprised of two independent, high-performance, frequency discriminators and two manually adjustable pulse-width modulators. The part is widely known as a logic-level multivibrator or dual-edge triggered flip-flop, used for time-delayed or exponential waveform generation, edge detection or pulse detection applications.
The device is based on two separate, self-oscillating latch (SOL) circuits, each capable of generating a triangular wave from low-voltage (down to 0.35V) stator pulses. The circuit provides a 2X frequency multiplication effect to the input pulses, and the resulting waveform has a duty cycle of 50%. When the latch switch is selected, the output will remain in the same state regardless of the inputs. The recirculating and single-shot modes can be disabled with the single-shot enable pin.
The MC14538BDTR2G can also be used as a timer in pulse interval applications. In this mode, a single-ended pulse is applied to the A or B input. This results in a pulse output of the same shape and duration as the input pulse, with a programmed delay which is adjustable via an external capacitor. A reset pin can also be used to reset the pulse to a high or low state. The delay and the pulse width can be independently adjusted.
The MC14538BDTR2G is designed for operation from 5V supply. The logic input is tolerant to up to 5.5V, and it is also capable of producing logic outputs of voltages up to 4V.
