MC1488D1013TR Application Field and Working Principle

The MC1488D/3TR is a Dual Channel Differential Line Driver/Receiver that conforms to the RS-485 and RS-422 Standards, providing high performance and differential data transmission over balanced transmission lines in “point-to-point”, multipoint, or broadcast systems. It has many applications in industrial, commercial and military fields. It has the features of low power consumption and high speed data communication capability.

The MC1488D/3TR is based on CMOS technology and has the advanced features of low power consumption, high speed operation, wide common mode range, low noise, and low offset. It offers good pulse shape to support longer cable lengths, along with full short circuit protection and device(s) supply overvoltage protection.

Application Field

MC1488D/3TR is mainly used in the industrial field. It can be used in distributed control systems and computer communication networks, such as fieldbus, to convert TTL signal level to balanced signal level and receiver it back. It can also be used as local area networks (LANs), highway noise cancellation and automotive systems.

Working Principle

The MC1488D/3TR has two differential voltage signals, A and B, driven by an input logic level or by an RC network. Output signals for both A and B generate a differential voltage between them that is compatible with an RS-485 system. Signals from A and B are matched to closely provide balanced signals and also to reduce the common mode noise on the line. Both output signals’ reciprocal rest at “high-impedance state” when the input is low and the EN+/EN– pins control the outputs.

The MC1488D/3TR is designed to interface TTL with EIA-485. It is designed to reduce the propagation delay and speed up the data transmission rate up to 250 Mbps. It is capable of up to 32 drivers per line while maintaining proper signal integrity, robust noise immunity and low power dissipation.

The device is optimized for low power consumption and it can operate with supply voltage from 3V to 5V. Its power efficient design ensures compatibility of the device with low power operations.
