?MC33152DG application field and working principle
MC33152DG is a high phase current integrated gate driver from STMicroelectronics which was introduced to the market in 2019. It is a device that can be used as a gate driver in power management applications such as boost converters, single-phase half-bridge/full-bridge (polarizing) converters, voltage-mode chargers and buck/boost inverters. The MC33152DG integrates a number of features such as adjustable dead time (DT) up to 200ns and adjustable rise/fall times.
The MC33152DG is a PMIC (Power Management IC) and can be classified under the Gate Drivers category. It is a three-phase gate driver with a peak output current up to 2.8A, a V DD operating-voltage range of 3.3V to 30V, and a V PP operating-voltage range of 7V to 28V. The device comprises of three identical high-current and low-loss gate driver outputs (GDO), which have built-in high-side pre-drivers for driving high-side power switches. With a 0 to 27V operating voltage and a 2A peak current per channel, the MC33152DG can provide up to 8A of peak current for use in three-phase motor applications.
The working principle of MC33152DG is based on its integrated high-side pre-driver circuit. When the enable (EN) signal is asserted, a 5V logic signal is sent to the pre-driver, which triggers the power switch by turning on its gate. The pre-driver sees a voltage of up to V PP (7–28V), which is larger than the microcontroller’s supply voltage. This allows the pre-driver to drive the gate of the power switch up to the desired operating voltage (V DD ). The high-side pre-driver circuit is designed to reduce the amount of losses that occur during the driving of the power switch.
The MC33152DG also features a programmable dead time (DT) up to 200ns which can be adjusted by changing the external resistor connected to the DT pin. The dead time, in turn, generates a unique rise-time (T OFF ) and fall-time (T ON ) of the output that can be adjusted using the same resistor. An adjustable soft-start feature has also been included, which helps to reduce in-rush current by slowly increasing the gate voltage to its operating level.
The MC33152DG has many additional features to optimize the performance of the device. For instance, the gate driver includes integrated fault protection functions such as crowbar (overvoltage protection or OVP) and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) to prevent damage from circuit faults and extreme conditions. Moreover, the device has a thermal shutdown feature that helps protect the device and its surrounding components from excessive temperatures.
The MC33152DG is an integrated three-phase gate driver device that is easy to configure, cost-effective and provides excellent performance in a wide range of applications. It has integrated low-loss gate drivers, adjustable rise and fall times, adjustable soft-start and adjustable dead-time settings. The device also provides fault protection functions including crowbar, undervoltage lockout and thermal shutdown which ensures reliability and safety in power management applications.
