The MC33375D-5.0R2 is an application field Voltage Regulator in the Linear series of voltage regulators from Freescale Semiconductor / Motorola. It is a three terminal low drop out regulator for automotive applications such as engine control and body electronics. The MC33375D-5.0R2 features a wide input supply voltage range of 2.7V to 24V and is available in the N package which measures 5 x 5 mm. It also features an option which allows for the output voltage to be programmed from 1.2V to 5.0V through the voltage adjustment pin, and can handle up to 1A of load current.

The MC33375D-5.0R2 voltage regulator’s main characteristic is its high accuracy where it can provide output voltages with an error of ± 1.5 %. It has a quiescent current of 20mA (typical value) and a low Dropout voltage of 0.7V @ 1A which makes it suitable for applications with low voltage dropouts, such as automotive systems. This Voltage Regulator is also protected by an overtemperature circuit, while also having an overcurrent protection which cuts off the output when the current is too great, preventing any damage to the device.

The MC33375D-5.0R2 Voltage Regulator features a stand-by mode, which enables the Regulator to operate in a low-power state, reducing the quiescent current to around 0.010A, allowing for improved system power-saving for permanent or intermittent operation. This feature does reduce the load transient response time but is incredibly useful for applications which require periods of low power consumption. When the device is in stand-by mode it also features an enabled wake-up time in order to switch from the low quiescent current state to the normal operating current when the device is to be used.

The MC33375D-5.0R2 Voltage Regulator works mainly based on a feedback loop system, where the device measures the output and inputs the data into a control circuit, which then acts upon the pass elements to stabilize the output voltage. The voltage control loop makes use of an external resistive voltage divider, where a percentage of the output voltage is compared with the reference voltage and the resultant difference is then fed back to the control circuit. If the output voltage is lower than the reference, the control circuit then increases the gate voltage to the pass element, which in turn increases the current through the Pass element, and thus increasing the output voltage.

Overall the MC33375D-5.0R2 is a very useful Voltage Regulator for applications which require a precise and regulated output voltage. Its features such as the low Drop-Out voltage, the wide input voltage range and the stand-by mode make it a highly reliable device for automotive applications. The accuracy of ±1.5% makes it a useful choice for applications which require precise output voltages, as this accuracy is far higher than normal unregulated voltage regulators.
