The MC33895FC is an integrated power stage specifically designed for brush and brushless electrical motor control applications. This component is capable of providing power output up to 19W at 0.5A. It features a high-side and low-side floating half-bridge driver, a fault monitoring function and a PWM controlled current-mode dimmer. With its broad range of features and small package size, the MC33895FC is an ideal solution for motor control applications such as pumps, fans and servomotors.
The MC33895FC consists of four sections: an interface section, a power stage, a power fault monitoring section and an analog dimmer control section. The interface section includes an I2C interface, GPIOs and protection circuitry. The power stage contains the power half-bridge driver and current sense amplifier. The power fault monitoring section includes fault flags for open load, over-voltage, over-current and thermal conditions. And the analog dimmer control section allows the user to adjust the speed and torque of the motor by adjusting the analog voltage applied. This section also contains a 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) which is used to set the output current.
The working principle of the MC33895FC is based on a standard bridge driver configuration: the high-side and the low-side driver are combined in a half-bridge driver. The input of the high-side driver is the upper voltage level of the external power supply, while the input of the low-side driver is the lower voltage level. The outputs of the drivers are connected to the stator of the motor. When both drivers are enabled, current flows through the motor and the motor starts to rotate.
The current flowing through the motor is continuously monitored by the current sense amplifier. When the current reaches the upper current limit defined by the DAC, the fault flag is set and the drivers are disabled. The fault flag can be read out through the I2C interface. The slew rate of the drivers is also adjustable through the DAC. When the slew rate is set too low, the drivers can be disabled by an external circuit.
The MC33895FC is suitable for applications in automotive, consumer, home appliance, commercial & industrial electronic and medical markets. The combination of features within this device and its small package size makes it an ideal solution for motor control solutions such as pumps, fans and servomotors.
